The 89-year-old Cuban leader gave a rare speech Tuesday, to concede that while he might not be around for long, the communist government he helped to establish in the island nation would outlive him and continue strong.
According to the AP, Fidel Castro told Communist party leaders: “I’ll be 90 years old soon. Soon I’ll be like all the others. The time will come for all of us, but the ideas of the Cuban Communists will remain as proof on this planet that if they are worked at with fervour and dignity, they can produce the material and cultural goods that human beings need, and we need to fight without truce to obtain them.”
The remarks echo the defiant tone the elder Castro took after President Barack Obama‘s historic visit and conciliatory appearances alongside Raul Castro last month. “We don’t need the empire to give us any gifts,” he wrote.
