Socialists have neglected the virtues, by: Andrew Taylor, Oct 20, 09

On an important much neglected level, socialism both in practice and as a unitive vision, represents the insight that we are not merely lonely monads seeking individual ego-needs.

Socialism witnesses to an inner ache - an orientation to the social project -wholeness and communion.

The reality of the priority of labour and class struggle in history is a first principle for those in the socialist tradition of Marx. But I think a great deal has been left unexplored in socialist theory and praxis regarding the specifically subjective dimension of man.

We need more than mere data; truth is saving knowledge! Not mere formulaic truths, but curiosity, the capacity to wonder before the Beautiful. This specifically human faculty demands socialist education to form discerning, inquiring minds.

And so the project of Culture, of educating our cadre in aesthetics is an ongoing priority, not an add-on inferior to economic theory.

Our task: to form a movement expressive of joyful spiritual culture, to nurture and praise the human capacity to know the beautiful and do the good.
