Havana, Cuba. - The Soto Cano military base, which U.S. keeps active in the Honduran territory since the seventies, had a key role in the coup that overthrew President Jose Manuel Zelaya.

This was said by Eva Golinger, U.S. lawyer and investigator, who ratified that the government in Washington has no formal or legal agreement for the North American nation to have military presence in Honduras, publishes the Web site of the Bolivarian News Agency (ABN).

Golinger said that this agreement was made in exchange for considerable financial aid, training and formation of troops from the Honduran armed forces since the fifties, when they began to use Honduras as a point to prepare the coup carried out against the Democrat James Arbenz in Guatemala.

He also noted that, years ago, President Zelaya initiated dialogue with the former U.S. president, George W. Bush, with the idea of converting the Soto Cano base in a civilian international airport.

Then, it was last year when the Honduran president announced that he would start the construction of an airport at the military base in Soto Cano and use it for international airplanes, and the financing would come from the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA.
