If Obama wants to avoid further escalation of the US occupation in Afghanistan and defy a General, he would be wise to use the phoney Karzai government's elections as a pretext for his resistance to yet more boots on the ground. The backlash from the Right and the Pentagon and the polls would still be enormous, but it is a good card he has no reason not to play.
