Statement On the Nobel Peace Prize 2009 for Obama, by The World Federation of Democratic Youth, Written by WFDY in: Africa, Asia Pacific, CENA, etc

LAST WEEK, the President and Commander in Chief of the United States of America Army who is presiding over two ever - violent and destructive wars, Mr Barack Obama, was awarded the so-called Nobel Peace Prize.
Despite the fact that this cannot be considered exactly a surprise, given that most of the previous laureates have been deeply committed with the imperialist goals of domination of mankind, this is, however, an issue that deserves the attention and awareness of all anti-imperialist forces, particulary youth organizations.
The huge media highlight given to this award is, indeed, a continuation of the campaign started even before the American elections to present Obama, this administration, and the USA itself, has a new hope for a change in the world. Its aim is to hide from the people and youth of the world, the growing contradictions of imperialism and the real increase of its agressiveness.
The truth is that the so called “new aproach” of Barack Obama, when related to the policies of George W Bush, has brought no significant changes to the USA policies or the correlation of forces in the world.
Despite all promises and cosmetic operations the facts are the following:
a) USA troops are still in Iraq, Afghanistan and more than one hundred countries where USA keeps its military bases and thousands of troops ready to intervene at any moment.
b) USA, has reactivated the 4th Fleet that threatens in all Latin American countries, jeopardizing the ongoing processes of liberation and the sovereign of all those countries and peoples.
c) The instalation of seven new military bases in Colombia by the USA is an even stronger demonstration of the support given to the oppresive and militaristic government of Alvaro Uribe.
d) The support to the continuation of the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the daily humiliation of the Palestinian people, despite all rethoric about promoting a peace process, when indeed this is a peace concept based on safeguarding Israeli interests
e) The fact that there is no tangible change what so ever regarding the unfair and internationally condemned blockade to Cuba, as well, as the refusal to accept the right of freedom and return of the Cuban Five Heroes to its motherland or even the possibilty to have a new approach to the process.
f) The “forget the past” philosophy that denies the judgement of all those who were involved in war crimes related to the well known tortures and other kinds of violations of basic human rights that took (and probably still take) place in the American prisons.
g) The continued and extension of the so-called targeted sanctions against the people of Zimbabwe by the government of Obama under the draconian and dubious Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act. Thus further creating very hostile economic conditions for people living peacefully in their sovereign country with their natural resources.
h) Last, but not least, the constant threats to military intervene in Iran or other countries motivated only by these countries’ choices of development in a non US-dependent policy is a clear demonstration that Obama is no different from previous US Presidents: those who don’t follow the US orders will suffer the consequences, if necessary with their lives.
As a dark coincidence of this same week, it is rather relevant, that in the framework of the UN Security Council, USA under the leadership of the now awarded Nobel Peace Prize Obama, has approved the extension of the NATO presence in Afghanistan for one year more.
The only answer to this and other manouvers of imperialism is to spread the information, clarifying as much as possible and, of course, continuing the struggle against imperialism in all its expression, as this certainly is the only way for a true and lasting peace, based on justice, equality and sovereign.
