The Ben Ali regime in Tunisia is to hold presidential and legislative "elections" on October 25. A new electoral farce, whose results are known beforehand, just as in previous electoral 'events'.
The Tunisian people are deprived of liberties and basic rights. They enjoy no freedom of expression, demonstration or organization.
On the eve of the "elections", a real climate of fear has descended upon all opponents and advocates of the independent movements. These days, arrests, physical assault, police surveillance, and travel bans have proliferated to silence any challenge to the electoral farce. The leaders of the movement in the Mining area, condemned to heavy sentences, have languished in inhumane conditions in prison since June 2008.
The group to boycott elections in October 2009 in Tunisia calls for a rally to denounce the electoral farce and demonstrate against the worsening repression and police violence in Tunisia.
