Global Recent Developments in Trade Union Support for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions vs. Israel, Andrew Taylor, June 10, 2010

A precis of a number of articles from pacbi.org and Trade Union websites

The membership of the University and College Union (UCU) at its Congress 30 May 2010 in Manchester has reaffirmed its commitment to the Palestinian campaign for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel. UCU’s Congress also voted with an overwhelming majority to "sever all relations with Histadrut*, and to urge other trade unions and bodies to do likewise."

The Scottish Trade Union Congress (STUC) reaffirmed in its annual meetings its BDS policy. Days earlier, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) had also reaffirmed its own overwhelming support for BDS. The British TUC has also launched with the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign (PSC) an important drive aimed at implementing a wide boycott of Israeli colonies’ products and services.

The Port Workers Union of Sweden will blockade all ships that trade
with Israel from 15 to 24 June, thus preventing the entry and exit of products originating in or destined for Israel . The blockade will be extended to all ports.

From South Africa’s COSATU to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) is gaining substantial Union support against Israel until it complies with its obligations under international law and recognizes the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.

The Israeli Histadrut unions’s long standing partnership in the Israeli state’s collective-punishment and apartheid policies particularly its January 13th, 2009 support for Israel’s war crimes in the Gaza strip has been condemned by a number of unions, including the British Communications Workers Union (CWU)and others in Belgium, Spain, France, Norway and around the world. The Scottish Trade Union Congress (STUC)is now reviewing its relations with Histadrut.

The writing is on the wall for the Israeli ruling-class's vicious policies toward the Palestinian nation and the global working-class is beginning to speak out loud in anger!

*Histadrut is an organization of the settler Jewish workers, and was the key Zionist organization responsible for the formation of the Israeli state. Histadrut supported the "Christmas massacre" against Gaza 18 months ago: "Israel had no choice but to respond to the repeated attacks and aggression as an act of justifiable self-defense."
